2. South Africa is the largest producer of platinum group metals (PGM’s), accounting for about 70% of global supply and about 75% of the world's platinum reserves. PGM’s are a vital material in the new-energy industry - they increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption in many processes, such as the production of plastics, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals and petrochemical fuels. They are also used in the auto industry - they are used in electric vehicles, aircraft turbines, fuel cells, and emission control systems, electrical converters, etc. In general, PGM metals are used in LCD glass, silicones, nitric acid, electrical contacts, and many more.

It led to the establishment of the city of Johannesburg, the financial center of South Africa, and has shaped the foundation of the country’s modern mining industry. Since the discovery of gold there, South Africa is responsible for producing about 40% of all gold.

It is also used in large industrial cutting tools and magnets, and as components in the aerospace and energy sectors.
